The letter is an account of the painting activities in the days after Theo’s departure, beginning on Monday, 7 August (
see letters 254 and
258). When Van Gogh began the present letter he had finished three painted studies. A day later he added a fourth and resumed the letter
(ll. 87-99), which was thus written over two days. By Saturday, 12 August these have been joined by at least one work with ‘lumps of dune earth’ (
F 2a / JH 176) and a landscape (‘Rijswijk meadows’) (
see letter 256). Although it is not known how long it took on average to produce the studies (which were not very big), nor how regularly Van Gogh worked, it seems likely that during these days he was working steadily, with an average output of about one painting a day. Based on this, we date the letter, with the reservations mentioned, to Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 August 1882.
