The letter was written on Monday, because Van Gogh speaks of ‘yesterday, Sunday’
(l. 116). On the Saturday evening preceding the letter he painted the green meadows with the cinder road
(l. 7). It appears from
letter 256, in which the same painting is mentioned, that that Saturday was 12 August, so that the present letter dates from Monday, 14 August 1882. In
Brieven1914 Jo van Gogh-Bonger dated it ‘15 August ’82’ – perhaps basing this on the postmark.
